My 49 8N will show a drop every time it sparks when cranking. I guess the coil pulls enough current to show. David.

The ignition draws 3to 4 amps when the points close. The meter will flip back and forth when the engine is cranking. This gives an instant check on the ignition system. The meter will tell you if the cutout sticks closed, just watch it when the engine stops.Years of idiot lites seems to have dumbed down a lot of tractor owners. An owners manual is a must for tractor owners. The question where a fellow couldnt find the engine oil dipstick on a Farmall C is a perfect example. My John Deere H doesnt have a dipstick.Nothing wrong with being ignorant about a subject.Refusing to educate your self is not good.

Bill..... ...due to the non-contact design of the inductive loop ammeter, (buncha fine wires inside loop) it is very difficult to test with electrical meter.

Me? Heres what I'd do, find a good 6v-headlite bulb (to limit current, but draw enuff to make the ammeter needle wiggle, taillite ain't big enuff) and run a wire thru the loop and lite-up headlite with 6v battery.

Surprizingly enuff, ammeter don't care 6 or 12v, don't care positive or negative ground. Its only about 20% accurate, so don't set yer watch by it. ..... ...Dell, former electronics calibration Lab Engr, retired
