Does it require a special tool? I tried using a pair of plyers and it won't budge. I think the fuel line must be clogged because the engine will start but shuts down after a minute or so.
Any ideas?

Thats a case of the right tool for the right job. Plyers are not and never will be the right tool. On most you need a 7/16 wrench to do that. Plyers are good with fence etc but thats it

Loosen the fuel cap and see if it'll keep running. (Plugged vent... so drill a 1/8" hole thru the center of the fuel cap.... away from the fuel tank.)

Clean the gascolator screen.

Sears makes a tool called a "line wrench", brake line, fuel line etc. They can probably be bought individually or as a kit.

While a set of gas pliers should remove the fuel line nuts no problem, you will really chew them up. a WRENCH is the proper tool to use.

Nothing special about them.

Don't guess about running out of fuel.. check it. Pull the bowl drain on the carb and see if the carb bowl has fuel in it when she stalls.
