Got the front axle kingpin out (note the worn out bushing!), but the radius arm pin is still STUCK. I cut the mushroomed end of it off, and applied heat, PB Blaster, 3 lb. sledge, 8 lb. sledge, and then the 12 ton press with more heat and PB... Gonna leave it in the press overnight (with the squeeze on), and will try again tomorrow night...

If you can't find the CRC stuff - look for "Pipe Break" in a green can. It's made by "Califonex" I can't personally vouch for it, but according to a couple of tractor guys around here it's supposed to be the best penetrating rust bond dissolving stuff on the face of the planet. (But aren't they all?)

I picked up a can, but gave it to my dad before I could really use it.

There's a plumbing supply store here that carries it - they said they sell most of it to tractor restorers. Only place I've ever seen it.

Gary,

I'll have to look around for the freeze stuff (my Dad used to use something like that to test electronics). Was in several places yesterday (Walmart, Menards) looking for PB Blaster (didn't find any), and don't remember seeing anything like this. Will check Home Depot and Lowes next time I'm in town.

That's it exactly!

Dell, I'll have to try the drilling idea. I can only push from one side, since the original pin has a "head" on one side that fits into a recessed area on the radius arm. I cut the other end of the pin off flush with the arm (to remove the mushroomed part), and have been using small nuts and old sockets as pseudo drift pins. After I bang on them, the nuts, being mild steel, look like pennies left on the railroad track... Have to be careful with them, too, 'cause they tend to shoot out when I hit them, and I do mean SHOOT! Eye protection and a long sleeve heavy sweater came in handy last night!

ED;

This was recommended by a friend of mine, that is in charge of the water dist. here. I told him about this prob. you were having, and he says he uses this stuff to remove rusted broken off bolts in the water pipe couplers. I have used it on rusted up bolts and nuts, with very good results.

He said not to use any more heat on the pin, but to keep pressure on it while spraying the pin with this.
What do ya have to loose???? He said you can buy this at most any good hardware store.

Keep us posted!!!!

That looks just like my HF 20 ton press which has been in the exact pose before. I was able to push mine out with the 20ton about an 1/8" at a time with a loud bang each time it moved.

I have one to do now and I just keep soaking it on the tractor with PB Blaster hoping its going to go easier than the last one. I'm going to try to remove the 8n axle and support from this one and install the correct ones. First attempts with the bolts through the axle extension were not good.

Where are you at? I'm close to Rock Island.

Ed..... ...dang yer gittin' serious aint'cha???

tip: summtimes a thru drill 'bout 1/4" will relieve rivet like swelling pressure caused by previous pounding that caused "mushroom" head. Might relieve enuff pressure with just about 1" deep 1/4" hole, try it! ...or... push from other side.

I certainly wouldn't want to drill out the radius arm pin by hand. Take it to a real machine shop where they have a good DooAll milling machine to hold everything square ..... .Dell
