Depends upon whether the coil was manufactured for a (+) ground machine or a (-) ground machine.

That's the trouble with a coil of unknown history that's marked "dist" and "batt", rather than (+) and (-).

If you have 2 coils both marked "dist" and "batt" and one happened to have been originally used on a (+) ground machine, and the other used on a (-) ground machine, the internal connections are OPPOSITE!

Using an ignition 'scope, it is EASY to see if the coil is connected correctly.

Alternately, you can use the "lead pencil trick".

The site linked below tells the same story about coils WITHOUT the (+) and (-) markings, and tells you how to do the "lead pencil trick" to observe ignition pulse polarity.

Well on one like that then its hard to say. If the coil is made for a + ground tractor yes it would be correct but say its off a car then it may not be correct. Of course it also might help if you told use what tractor your working on and if the coil is the one that came on it new or if you just got the coil from say an auto parts store. Either way it will work just not as well as it would if wired correctly
