Bouncy readings can also mean worn brushes and tall mica in the genny.

Can't quote you a spec.. but i undercut them a 'hair'.. that way the brushes don't hang.. etc.

You said ammeter jumps back & forth..... .sounds like it may be charging? Does it keep the battery charged?

As far as looking, stuck contacts, broken springs, burnt wires, etc. There is a resistor on the back...examine for cracks & you can measure it. My original 8N-10505B (Auto-Lite, VAZ-4001A, ser # 3-E007176) has the value, "20" (ohms) stamped in the resistor. I do not recommend disconnecting this type of resistor, as it may break like crock or ceramic.

Bill..... I'm assuming this is an "intelectual exercise"? 'cuz as a general rule, mechanical relay failures are non-repairable. Why? 'cuz relay armature pivot points are NOT jeweled bearings, they're plain soft metal and subject to non-repairable wear. While you can sometime "polish" the contact points with fine ladies sandpaper fingernail files, that generally leads to shortened life and 'nutter' re-file. Naturally, a continuity check is du-riggur on all coils and anti-overcurrent resistors..... ...Dell
