We've all seen it written numerous times how the 8N was designed for an engine of apprx 25 hp. Has anyone ever heard or read of how reliable these same tractors were after the addition of the V8 that was apprx. 100 hp?

thanks for your input,

Pete

A 254 inch Funk 6 cylinder was in Dad's 2N for about 20 years as our primary tractor. This was for about a 70 acre farm. I don't recall any real reliability problems while he was using it, but when I went to restore it, second gear had several teeth out, and I don't know how the pinion was still transmitting any power.

Keep in mind, these engines were never intended to be operated at full power, the governor kept the speed (and the power) down, probably closer to the 35-40 hp range.

A fellow who used a 6 cyl conversion said it would knock a tooth off a transmission gear if the plow got hung up on a root. My 640 with a single bottom plow will spin out easy if the plow hits some thing solid. The plow has a shear bolt but I plow at a lower speed.Power without traction wont work.

Pete..... ..dunno, notta Funky expert. My guess, the hollow coupling sleeve between the tranny output and the diffy input would be the weakspot. Kinda like a fuse. But the major problem with the Funk conversions is TRACTION. There is just so much available traction with ag-bar tires and then you spin out. Yeah, you can add traction enhancing liquid weight in tires and run duals, but yer dirt is most likely give-up before the rest of the tractor does from the 100hp V8..... ..Dell, non-authority
