I had pulled the front off of my 52' 8N to replace the water pump and a few other things and while I was there I had decided to replace the king pin and bushing and the radius rod pins. After all the trouble I had seen with other attempts to replace their radius rod pins I took a big pipe wrench and "twisted" on the axle, the pins do not seem to be loose, I'm going to leave them alone. I decided to remove the king pin (done) and had to take a big hammer to it's steel bushing. Well guess what, I went to install the replacement copper/brass/bronze bushing today and on the second tap it easily fell out the backside, whoopee. So now it looks like I'll be looking for a way to fix my front axle. What's so aggravating was how tight the original steel bushing was in the axle. Looks like there would be some money in the "oversize" bushing market for all these worn axle holes. I guess the general fix is to have the hole welded up and then ground back out?

If you have a welder at home..and the brass bushing was nearly tight enough as it was.. I'd run 2 beads, side by side, where the bushing will ride, using 6013 rod around the ID of the axle. Chip it and then check fit. may have to hit it with a file or air grinder with an emory bit. then pound in the bushing and go.

Sounds like somebody has already "fixed" tha axle by reboring it and putting an oversize bushing in it. If you can mic the original I might be able to whip up a new one to fit out of some odd bits I have in the shop.

Thanks for the offer TOH. That's real nice for someone you no nothing about. I may have to take you up on it but.....i did some looking around on the net last night and forund a "bushing company". They sent me an email and said that one bushing didn't meet their minimum order but they told me who to contact in my area. Anyway, today I ordered a bushing that I made sure was too big O.D. and too little I.D. Since my labor to myself is "free" I can work on making it fit for awhile. Besides, it was only about $11.00. I didn't think that was bad for something I'm pretty sure I can make work and as many of you have said, when it comes time to replace it again it probably wont be me, even though I'm only 46.

Hmmm. My old bushing fell right out (was worn through on one side). New one (brass) had to be pressed in, but not with too much force. Not sure if the old was steel or brass - it's out in the barn and I'm not at the moment.

I see three solutions. You can use the Hobo solution (Locktite); the Sean solution (bore it out & make a bushing) or buy a good used center axle. All three will work; just a matter of cost!

I have only ran into one that had a steel bush'n,,, it was better than the brass replacement,,, I think the brass replacement chucks but makes for a good maintenance item,,, either way its the bush'n or the pin,,,, lock tite/JBweld/lockweld the replacement and move on

Machine shop can bore it and press in a steel bushing. Then bore it to fit the replacment bushing..
