Its my son's truck and quit during normal operation. Restarted maybe once or twice. We replaced ignition module and coil, from NAPA. Still no spark. The red lead is below 2 volts, seems low, even with ballast resistor? Any suggestions welcomed.

The HEI disti may be an update, but it worked well for about 2 years.

Thanks Old and T. I sure like this forum. I guess it is just where I feel at home. I will pass the information along to Trav.

Den, thanks for the confirmation. We just jumpered and it fired right up. There is also an alarm system powered from the coil side of the switch. Sure is nice to tap into the experience here. :-)

Yep that HEI ignition does not belong on it but yes it will work fine. You might try replacing the cap and rotor. Those caps and rotors are known to have problems if its been wet where you are and that will short out the spark. Many years ago I found that out the hard way when a shop could not find the problem with our 1970 GMC pick up I fould it when I held my hand on the cap as my dad tried to start it. I got zapped big time. We replaced the cap and rotor and drove out. Did have a little fight with the shop because they wanted to charge my dad for the work they had done and there work did not fix it but what I did, did fix it. That was the last time my dad took his truck to that shop and he let others know about the place, but that was decades ago

Don't use a resistor with HEI. HEI was not available until 73, so your truck was originally points and the wire supplying the coil is too small. Run a new 12 ga wire from the source all the way up to the distributor cap without a resistor. The HEI needs all 12V. Also make sure the block has a good ground.

The cap has two conncections on it one is B+ the Ignition source and the other is for a tachometer lead. The B+ side needs a 12 gauge wire its pink from the factory. The tach wire is white and 16 gauge wire. If the tach wire is grounded you'll get no spark. Look close and you'll see B+ stamped on cap. The system DOESN'T require anything plugged into the tach port.
