8N Start Problem

I have two 8N's - both have the same problem - similar equipment. One has front-loader, other has gannon. I've been having various degrees of starter problems. On the 6-volt, when I press the start button it causes a "chattering" of the starter relay as if the battery was low. Bendix does not engage. Got a new battery installed which did not correct the problem. Starter was rebuilt about a year ago. I'm prepared to turn over to a mobile mechanic to get it back in operation. That might be expensive. Running out of places to look -- problem seems simple, but I can't find the answer. We've been using the tractor for landscaping after fire destroyed everything in firestorms. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S.: I posted this earlier today, but couldn't find it on the site....must have done something wrong.

Thanks to everyone for all your help! Put my old 8N – 6-volt system back to work!
I took the advice from all of you – you guys obviously know what you’re talking about. I replaced all the high current cables with 1/0 (3 cables); replaced the starter solenoid; cleaned the surface between the starter and chassis ground (the surface had, in fact, been coated with some insulating lacquer that essentially killed the ground path to the start motor, but I’m sure you folks know all about that). I threw those cables as far away as I could!! Next I plan to make the same changes to my 8N – 12-volt system – expect it will improve the starting on it also. MUCH OBLIGED!

I agree. Weak connections or corroded battery calbes. Like Dell says, get 6 volt battery cables.

Richard..... ...guess what? you posted on NTC (the other site) but thats ok, we're equal opportunity guessers and insulter's here. (grin)

The reason yer chatterin' aint'chur starter ...or... yer solenoid, ittz'chur BATTERY CABLES. THROW'em AWAY!!! (seriously)

Why? 'cuz you have INVISIBLE corrosion INSIDE yer molded battery clamps.

Gitt'cha some 'arry chested one-ought (1/0) thick as yer thumb battery-to-solenoid cable ($10, cheap) 'sedda' wimpy 12-volt cable.

Then THROW the flat-braid ground cable away too. Gitta 11-in flat-braid ground cable ($10, cheap) and bolt it to real castiron ground like a steering box bolt 'sedda' rusty sheetmetal OEM ground. Yer starter motor will ZING like you was using 12volts. (trust me)

DOO-ITT to BOTH yer 8N-tractors, doesn't matter, frontmount or sidemount, 6-or-12volts ..... .Dell

I agree with Bob. But I'll add that if the cables are the type used on cars and trucks there to small and will cause that problem also. You need 0 or 00 battery cables on a 6 volt system

A "chattering" starter solenoid is almost ALWAYS a sign of a weak battery OR poor connection(s) at the battery terminals, or at the other ends of the battery cables, OR defective cables themselves... copper conductor not making good contact with the lead or brass terminal crimped or soldered to it.

You could even have a poor ground between the starter and the bellhousing due to paint or just between the parts.
