I broke several rotors this past week and never fired the tractor up. I have read the "archives. The term slow learner was used to describe another with my problem. The tractor is a 8N after sr# 263843. The old Distributor cap had a great gouge in one of the Contact points. I broke that rotor, changed the cap and broke more. The new cap fit more snugly, when I removed it the distributor "moved". When I attemped to tighten the hold-down bolt it would not. What does it "bite "into. There are no threads in the Governor housing to tighten it to and the picture in the FO-4,does not show a nut to go underneath the bolt that goes thru the Retainer Plate. Mine does have the Cam Retainer and the Spring. In attemping to insure it was fully seated I used a board and a small hammer. The new cap was from Canada, the rotors were from TSC & Just *ns, the other rotor was a USA made part. Your input is appreciated. The tractor is 150 miles away so can't run out to the barn and check real quick, which is why it is so frustrating when it won't work when I have the time to work. Thanks

Could be shaft bushings.. or the clip is missing under the rotor to hold it on tight.

Bushings and shaft in your distributor are most likely worn out. How old is it and how long has it lasted? Stuff wears out. Have to fix that or keep buying more rotors and caps. Bushing kits use to be available but that's not going to fix a worn shaft unless making your own bushings and smoothing shaft up to fit. New distributors are available too.

If you have one of those dust covers under the rotor and over the points(looks like a little dome) be sure everything is lined up and square. I broke a few rotors getting it right. Hold down bolt goes into the block if I remenber right.
