I have a 9N that would not charge. The trator was changed from a 1 wire generator to a 3 wire and the wiring harness was all chopped up. I installed an 8N front mount distributer harness had the generator rebuilt and put an 8n front mount distributer style regulator. Cleaned all connections. jumped from battery to armiture on the regulater and it still won't charge. I'm stumped.

I will re check my wiring against the diagram. Then I'll try grounding the field. Should it go to charge after I ground the field. All else has been done that you guys suggested. I wont be able to work on it till the weekend but I'll get back to you and let you know how I made out. Again thanks for you help.

Since it was changed to "a 3 wire generator", that means we really don't know what generator you have , do we?

Just in case you have a type-B instead of a type-A, you might want to determine this.

Paul;
That is exactly the way my 2N is wired.

First ?.....When you did these changes did you make up a wiring diagram of the changes?

Second ?..... Are you saying the 3 wire genny you installed has connections for AMP....Field....and Grnd. ?

Third ? When you installed all of this did you POLARIZE the charging system at the Regulator.

Forth thing to do.....If the answer is yes to the three ?'s above, check your wiring against my wiring diagram. If you are still having NO charge.

Make sure the Grounding for the Regulator is nice and shiny.
Then repolarize the system, as in the polarizing pic. shown here.

My wiring diagram:

My volatge reg.:

Like I said make sure all grnd. contacts are clean of all paint and dirt.

Also this pic. shows how to polarize the charging system. When you polarize, have the key Off....engine NOT running!!!!! !!!

Report back with your results please!!!

Hope this helps.

Gary :)

Have you actually checked the generator's output voltage?

Then (temporaily, for testing) full-field it by grounding the generator's "F" terminal. What does THAT do to the generator's output voltage?

Be SURE the generator AND the regulator are grounded to clean metal (no rust or nice fresh paint).
