Flail mower for 8N?

I have to tackle an area of land I have which has become overgrown - it comprises of medium size pine and occasional large oak trees with a lot of small trees, shrubs and other brush in between - I am going to have a go at it with the brush hog but not sure if that will do the trick.

Would a flail type mower be better? I just want to go through and munch everything down and clear out the brush due to fire danger - it is about 3 acres or so - so not going to do it manually. Is there a flail mower which would attach to an 8N? Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

Lee

I have a 5' bush hog and a flail mower. The flail mower worked pretty good to mulch down multiflora rose bushes, but choked on tree saplings, and the flail mower took more HP to run thru thick brushy stuff than the hog took. The flail mower took a lot more maint. to replace/repair the thousand little flail blades. I ended up parking the flail mower and then sold it. Sounds like you will be better off with a bush hog. I cleared out an old overgrown pasture like you described with my trusy 'ol bush hog. It was a bit nerve racking the first couple passes, I had to grit my teeth, raise my feet, and cringe in my seat when banging thru saplings 1-2" in diameter, and multiflora rose bushes taller than my tractor hood.... That was in back in 2000, and field is a nice horse pasture now.

Lee:

A decent 8N will run a 5' flail mower in most conditions but flail mowers are not designed for what you propose to do.

A 4 or 5 foot bush hog type mower is far better suited for heavy brush clearing.

Also.....drag a small chain saw with you to tackle the heavier stuff. I always do!

Rule of thumb when brushhogging..... ...if the 8N will run it over (within reason) you can mow it with a brushhog. Just use 1st gear and take it slow! Might be noisy and ugly, but after a couple of seasons you will be steaming through in 2nd or 3rd gear. I wouldn't spend the $ on a flail mower unless you really want one. Get extra blades for the brushhog and go after it!
