8n vs 9n

I"m looking at buying a tractor. I"m stuck between an 8n and a 9n both in good shape, the only difference is the price. Is the 8n"s 4 spd worth an extra $500? I am going to do some light grass mowing, level the lane with a 5" blade and maybe plow the garden. What do you"all think?? Thanks.

As others point out.. it is not only an extra gear difference. but different brake arangement.. possibly another distrib arangement.. position control, foot boards. and a tapped diffy for a swinging drawbar.. bracket... etc... plus it will be newer. That said.. whichever one is in the best condition is likely the better machine in a given price range.. not alot you CAN'T do with a 9N that ou CAN do with an 8N

I have a 50's 8N with the side mount dist. A hole lot easier to change point ect than the front mount dist.

I have both front mount and side mount 8Ns and don't understand why the side mount seems that much easier to you. Taking out the two bolts that hold in a front mount is easy enough. Would you care to elaborate?

I prefer the brake pedal arrangement and 4 speed transmission in an 8N over the 9N or 2N setup and the position control for the hydraulics is also a plus but Zane Sherman can take care of that for a small fee with the Zane Thang for 9Ns and 2Ns. I've owned and worked both machines and if the $500 more for the 8N wasn't going to break my bank I'd go with that. Either machine is a great old workhorse though.

9n wont take a stationary hitch the comes in handy for pulling a trailer.I could not use the 3 point on my 640 to run a baler.There are some jobs that just dont work right on the 3 point.A wood trailer that is loaded a bit heavy behind the axle will push the 3 point upward at times.

It would help if you told the price other than a $500 difference,,,, If both are in good condition and say 2K for the 9 and 2500 for the 8,,, I would pay the difference,,, if the 8 has a side mount distributor ell yell and both position control and draft control ell yell I would upgrade for 500,,, the mid 50 to 52 is the better,,, but a 9/2 n will do the same werk just does not have the upgrades the 8n has,,, its still hard to say less i seen'em

Well if its the 8N with the side mount distributor yes its well worth the extra $500 but even if it isn't that extra gear does come in handy

The 8N has several improvements over the 9n. What you are looking at may be a 2N. They are similar but the 2N's are more numerous. The 4 speed is very important to me because fourth gear will get you to where your going quick. Most 8N's also have a constant draft control that helps keep implements such as plows at a constant depth. That is a huge plus if you plow. The later 8's have a steering box that is easier to adjust. Drive each one carefully and use all gears. Test hydrolic lift with a heavy weight, such as a brush hog too see if the pump will lift quickly, then disengage PTO to see how long it takes for implement to fall.
All things being equal, I would pay the extra for the 8. I own two, as well as one 2N.

If they were both in the exact same shape, the 8N would be worth more than $500 difference to me.

In fact I wouldn't even consider owning a 9N, but that is just me, and what I want the tractor for, about the same things as you want the tractor for.

In fact, if I were buying, it would be hard to sell me an 8N.

I would be at least be wanting something with live PTO, and hydro.

Different people will tell you different things. I personally have been on both tractors and my personal opinion is that one won't do anything the other on won't. Does either have a sherman transmission? If it was me and one had that it would be the one i'd buy. I do prefer the 4 speed transmission. John Smith have a very informative web site that has alot of usefull information on it. Something like Smiths old tractors. Either way I think you will be happy. Be sure to look at john smiths page especially his buying guide. Good luck and happy trails

The Sherman tranny, Zane Thang, and underframe swinging drawbar make a real tractor out of a 2 or 9 N. The only advantage that I see an 8N having over this is the location of both brake pedals on same side. I prefer a 2N equipped as described over a "stock" 8N in that the 8N has a terribly fast reverse, and are more prone to axle leakage on brakes at rear wheels. To clarify my statement regarding "swinging drawbar" mounted under belly; yes, it can be very easily done. I've been using this one I installed on my 2N for years. Mr. Bob
