I got my 8n out this week to bush hog and it would run for a few minutes and shut off. It would start right back up and go dead again. I changed the condenser and it started up and ran ok. Do you guys experience condenser failure routinely on your 8n?

I wouldn"t call the failures I"ve experienced with condensers in the ignition systems of my 2 and 8 N tractors routine.....more like inconvenient. The only nice things about it are that its a relatively inexpensive part and its relatively easy to replace. Relatively inexpensive means I can have a few spares laying around just waiting. Relatively easy to replace means if that"s the problem I"m back to work quickly and if its not then I"m on to the next troubleshooting step quickly. While a lot of people complain about the weak ignition system on the N tractors....for simplicty and ease of maintenance its a pretty darn good system....especially when you consider when it was developed. Sure, some of the parts are better then others.....and any breakdown which is unscheduled (and they are ALL unscheduled) is trying.....its nice to remember that this tractor was designed to satisfy a need for a simple tractor that the farmer could maintain and service in the field with minimum skills and tools.....and for my money....it fills the ticket. Next time you get a chance purchase a few extra condensers, a set of points or two, a couple of spare ballast resistors, and a spare ignition coil. The fuel you save on the trip down to the store later on will more then pay for the spares now.

Generally the condensors.. when they fail.. yield burned points, unless they fail short. While not impossible.. it is rare to to get a condensor that will heal, and then die quickly. I've seen it.. but not often. More often than not.. a die/self repair issue like that tends to be fuel or another conenction that was 'touched' when you replaced the condensor.

good luck.. you could be part of that 'rare' bunch.. law of averages has to have a 'hit' some time.

I think that condensers that fail after a short run time fail open as in loss of contact to the foil.I had a few run a short time and quit condensers, the last one in a Model A ford that would run about 1000 feet and sputter and stall. It mimics a fuel problem.I found the spark was very weak after the stall. After 10 minutes the engine would restart and stall again back home.A new condenser fixed the problem. My father in law was an old time mechanic, started working on Model T Fords. He said condenser failure was a problem in the T with 4 coils each with its own condenser. If you asked him about a short run time on an engine he would say change the condenser first. While mica condensers in radios were considered trouble free I have had to replace many.Import condensers that fail are probably made with poor insulating paper and lack of a good seal and the failure to use oil fill.Just checked a nos 36 ford condenser that tested good at 100 volts but showed bad leakage at 200 volts.I will not change a condenser when the points show little metal transfer.A Chrysler service bulletin said that good quality points are too hard to be touched by a file.

As i mentioned.. and 'open' fialure leads to burnt points... which should be easy to spot.. as the points don't heal..

Yeah Dunk and this battery came out of one of the dealerships used cars that another technician said was bad. So it was "free" to me.

:D

Dare I admit it but I haven't tuned mine up in over four years. I only use it from about March to October to mow grass. Each spring it fires right up after pulling the choke and turning on the gas, haven't even had to put the battery charger on it. Of course after I say this next spring it won't run at all.

Yep, you can't get much more than 5 years out of any battery.

Never have. Something else to put in the memory bank if I can remember where it is.
