New clutch...Not engaging transmission??? I just installed a new clutch kit on my 48 8N and polished the old flywheel face. After putting it all back together, it seems that the clutch (or ?) is not engaging the transmission. You can tell that the engine is not engaging the transmission in any way. I'm confused. How can the tranmission not be engaged at all? It's as if the clutch pedal is down all the time. Any tricks to installing a new clutch? Related to the polished flywheel? ...Appreciate any ideas....Looks like I will be splitting the old girl once again!

Be sure that you have plenty of free travel in the clutch pedal before the throw out bearing makes contact with the fingers on the pressure plate.

I don't think you have the disc in backwards because if you did the clutch would be engaged all the time.

Double check the adjustment.

After you tear it apart and put it back together you need to adjust the clutch pedal free play to 3/4". This holds the throw out bearing just off the pressure plate fingers. The manual has the instructions.

umm....not sure. A friend actually installed the clutch kit for me (I watched), but we did not know that there was a certain way to install it..so, are you talking about the hub that goes against the flywheel? And it needs to face a particular direction? Sorry for not being mechanically savvy.....

Randal;

Put this pic., (the center of it), along with what Soundguy and OLD just told you, and install it the right way. Then you will have CLUTCH.

If the disk is put in 180 out it will not sit like it needs to and will not work. On the disk theres a long side and a short side. The short side goes towards the flywheel and the longer side towards the pressure plate in if back wards it will do noting like yours is doing

?? Maybee they figure the mechanic will make notes on the orientation of the parts upon disassembly?

Dunno.. that's really not an answer. Actually.. if it was in the manual.. it would be helpfull to many not aware of it.

i heard that. If i am working with unfamiliar parts or assemblies.. i usually like to take notes.. or lay out parts on carboard in reverse order orientation to facilitate re-assembly.. that and/or take pics with digital camera.. BTDT

Some clutch plates are marked Flywheel Side but looking back we knew about off set clutch hubs as teen agers.We were willing to read and ask questions before starting a job.We also watched how things came apart,part of the learning process.This seems to be lacking in many tractor owners.

Ditto.. It is much easier to work on a piece of equipment if you can be there and help or watch it come apart. it's when somebody brings you a box of parts and a broke tractor that sometimes the head scratchin would start.. luckilly these old machines were designed somewhat with common sense approaches to fixin..
