My early 8N (Front Distributer) has a cable comming out of the area behind the block at about 2:00. It looks like a speedometer cable and is currently coiled-up. There is also a hole (small diameter), not big enough to be for the dial of a proof meter, below the instrumewnt panel on the right side.

Question #1 - What is the existing cable for? I can find no info or pictures showing it.

Question #2 - Is a Proof Meter available for an early 8N? If so, what is a source?

Looks like you may have a cable actuated Sherman transmission with just the remains of the cable exposed. Check out John Smith's excellent site for a photo of the cable and knob.

Regarding the proofmeter, new replacements meterheads and cables are available and can be retrofitted if you install a later style governor with the cable drive. To mount the proofmeter you will have to retrofit a later style dash with proofmeter hole or locally manufacture a way to hold the meter.

Good luck,
David
