I've got an 8N with the flathead Ford six. I was told that it "probably" is a Funk conversion, but I'm having some doubts. The tractor as a whole looks more like a "shade tree mechanic's" fantasy after a spell with the moonshine. The hood on mine is said to be from an old Massey (looks like crap, actually) I think someone proficient in sheetmetal crafting would be able to make a reasonably good looking "extended" 8N hood. It also has what could be a Sherman overdrive (edumacated guess). I have had some dificulty finding any usefull information on it's background or pedigree. I do know, now, that the six is a Ford 226 c.i. truck engine. The most reliable sources for parts for rebuild have been antique auto and truck catalogs. I am looking at a complete rebuild a.s.a.p. Before it quit, mostly from sticking valves and blow-by, it ran like the proverbial "sexually molested simian". I am planning on some hopefully inovative experiments when it is running again. I don't think it is worth trying to restore to original as it has been cobbled up so badly. So I wouldn't be losing anything historically or as an investment if I go a little wild and do some more shade-treeing. I am going to try to follow KCM's advise and look for that book. Hope this gave you maybe just a little help. L.D.

The best book I've seen on the Funks kits is the "Originality Guide: Ford N Series Tractors" by Rod Beemer and Chester Perterson. It is the most accurate book I've read on Fords N's and has a chapter that covers the Funk brothers.

Hello; Your friend is correct. The retro-fit kit was made by the Funk Brother's who also made airplanes and other things. One brother saw the first attempts at a Ford Tractor Dealer and offered to make the castings. This was the start, they also made one for the flathead V-8.From what I have read they made the kits and the dealer's and a few owners also made the conversion. There is some books that can help you more.

We're probably all mad at your friend for lucking onto one of those. :)

This site is full of really knowledgeable people and I expect one of them will be along shortly to answer your question. I'm also curious about it.
