I'm looking at a N serries ford with the distributor on the side (8N i'm told but no tach so I'm not sure) my point is it has two holes in the botttom of it.....they seem to be plugged with a "cotter key". They seem to be very consitant- like they were drilled in there. are these a product of abuse or is this something that's supposed to be there if so what is their purpose..Thanks for your advice. The tractor appears in good shape otherwise. although it appears to have a GM auto alternator on it and I don't think ol henry was that friendly with mr chevrolet in the 50-'s. Thanks..the new guy (maybe)

Dear Rookie..... ..isn't technology wonderful....jiggling cotter key to keep the drain hole open.....

The next thing you'll know, Ford will use Delco 12 volt alternators instead of 6 volt generators (grin)

Welcome to the N-World. Neat thing about N-Tractors, the're cute, have lots of 3-point implements to amaize you, eazy to work on as they were designed for the horse farmer, parts are eazy to find and are N-expensive.

Good Luck..... ...Dell

The hole(s) you are talking about are drains, the cotter key(s) are there to keep the hole from pluging, as you use your tractor they dance around to keep the hole open. But. I'm only aware of "one" hole on a "N" tractor?? Sounds like this tractor is a late50-52, not sure what happened to the hour meter though.

later,dave

There were some 27,000 8N's made between the change to the side distributer and the adding the tach. - about 5% of the total 8N's made (if my CRS is not acting up again, grin) - so it is sort of a rare "version" of the 8N. Too bad some one "messed it up", at least from the "collector" prospective, by changing to 12V.

They're drain holes. There will be oil and condensation that collect in the bellhousing. The cotter key vibrates and jiggles and keeps the hole open so all that gunk can slowly drip out.
