My 49 8N has picked up a bad habit of popping out of first gear when going down hill. It dosen't seem to happen in any other gear and only happens when going down hill which can get a little tricky at times. Would appreciate any words of wisdom.

My '52 8N also jumps out of first gear while using a 5' King Kutter finishing mower with full antifreeze in rear tires down a rather steep western Virginia mountainside. Replaced the small metal detent balls and springs from each side of the transmission housing with no improvement. I now use 2nd gear with no gear jump-out problem. I do not think our old N's were designed to go down steep hills with that much weight in that low of a gear.

I've had similar problems. The shift rail for 1st gear is at the top of the transmission. The detent ball wears into the rail such that it won't hold in first going down hill. To replace the rail (they are still avail from New Holland) you must split the tractor or perhaps it can be done by removing the hydraulic lift cover and the transmission covers (I've not tried this) Regards, EEA
