It seems like I have the only tractor in our little community, and recently have been asked to do driveways, bush-hogging, snow removal, etc. Todays request was for plowing and discing three acres, getting it ready for planting. Do you guys ever work for hire with your 8N's, I love useing mine, I'd love it even more getting paid at the same time, so whats the going rate for tractor work in NE VA?

I use my 2n a lot for small shredding jobs and my fee is $25 per hr. with a 4 hr. min
the 4 hr min is there to cover hauling/road time expense its just not worth it to me to spend 1 hr + loading unloading and trvling for a 1 hr job.

Ron,

Look at the economics of where you are... Northern Virginia... The home of the Big bucks..(not deer, but there are a few of them too !!!!) If it's for a friend... Then set your price accordingly.. IF not... Caveat emptor....

It's your tractor, you are responsible for damages, liability, maintenance... If you are doing it for profit... Let your conscience be your guide..

The going rate for small tractor work around here (SW Missouri) is $25. per hour with a 4 hour minimum if the tractor has to be trailered to the job.

Bush hogging is usually bid by the job because some places are steep with lots of trees and others are open and easy.

In my experience, when you hire a man and a tractor here they always give about 120% of what you pay for. It's a word-of-mouth business, so a good reputation is important.

I'm in the WV panhandle, and charge my neighbors $30/hour for brush-hogging. When mowing, you can bet you're going to break something sooner than if you were plowing and discing -- more moving parts and moving faster.

I'd say $25/hour for plowing and discing is a pretty good rate, but if gas prices keep going up and your local NH dealer is a long ways away, consider $30.

Most people want it done anyway and won't grump too much about the extra $$$.

Here in Louisville the going rate is $25 an hour depending on type of job. Bobcat work starts at $50 an hour with a 2-3 hour minimum. Plowing five acres with an 8N will take over half a day if I remember correctly. I would charge $30-$40 to plow a small garden depending on how far away it is. I am going to get a 3-point tiller for my 8N and see if it does the job. Jim(Ky)

I thought about purchasing a rototiller that would fit on the 8N, but everything I read led me to believe that the 8N was not suited to the use of one, seems the ground speed is to fast to allow it to work properly, so last year I bought a new two row bottom plow and a 5ft disc, mine pulls these easily in soft soil, kind fun to be using the tractor for what it was "really" designed for. I usually charge the same, about 25 an hour for strangers, a lot less for friends, but last year while using the "hog" I cut a rear tire, and that job cost me 200.00 to do.

To add to Rons comment about bush hogging, you also have to look a what you cutting. I don't know about VA but in NY we have a lot of thorn apple brush and the thorns just like tires especially if the tires are loaded. Not as bad as losing a $200 tire but just another headache that happens and you don't think about untill you find you tire flat a couple of days later..

$25 per hour is the fair rate here in North Florida.
