Oil pan leak

What I thought was the oil pan gasket leaking turned out to be a leak where the pan had been welded to fix a crack (prior to my owning it). The weld is now leaking and what I'm wondering is whether I should go ahead and replace the pan, or is there another way to seal the old weld? It's not a major leak, just enough to make a mess. I'm in the process of tearing this down to paint, and want to clear up the leaks before painting. Thanks for any help you can give.

If I were going to the trouble to paint the N I would drop the pan and see why the weld was leaking. Good chance to clean the innards. I would make a decision to have it rewelded or find a replacement pan. Pans should not be too hard to find in a "boneyard". Good luck, ray

I agree, first things first, take the pan off and check it out, it sounds like someone might have welded it while still on the tractor. I would'nt think a new/used oil pan would be to exspensive. There's nothing wrong with welding it if it's done right, I weld cast iron all the time at work, you just have to take your time, if ya decide to weld it send me a e-mail and I'll talk ya through it.

later,dave

OK, you talked me into it. I dropped the pan today, and am sure glad I did. Think I'll try for a new/used pan. If no luck there, then I'll holler for help welding from dave#1. Thanks guys, for your input.
