can anyone give me a rough estimation of about how many hours to expect to get out of a rebuilt 8N motor (castiron sleeve). Turned crank, new pistons, ect. Just doing average type work around the farm.

Keep the oil changed religiously(Every Sunday, not Christmas and Easter). Probably not every Sunday, but more often than the book calls for. Oil and filters are cheaper than an overhaul. Keep the air filter clean, tuneups anmd maintenance regularly. A good PM program is worth more than a lot of hard work later. Let's think of an aphorism...I've got it! "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

bg, Good point. PM is a whole lot cheaper than not. Had a neighbor, in the 50's that had an 8N, 40A very sandy soil, would change the engine oil and filter once a year, air cleaner too, and would used the cheapest oil available. He always said oil was too expensive, but always could come up with the $$ to put a rebuilt engine in it EVERY two years.

Phil.....'nuthr 50 yrs??? sorry, couldn't hep' m'sef (grin)

Somewhere, somebody told me 2000 hrs is equal to 100,000 miles to a car engine wearing out. I never calculated it out.

Most casual, non-plowing tractor work, you'd probley be hard pressed to put 100 hrs on tractor in year.

I have heard of tractors working in fine silt dirt having to be O'hauled every year.

Hope this helps..... ...Dell

Most aircraft engines last about 2000 hours before an overhaul is required. Just a data point. Just overhauled my 8N, and its possible the engine was done before. At least it looked like someone may have been into it before. But anothe 50 yrs and I will not worry about it.
