I own a Ford N Series tractor. I could use some help with a positive I.D. as to year and model.
The serial # is *8N164814* . If I read the ser# charts correctly this could be a 1944 2N or a 1949 8N. The engine has a front mounted distributor. The rear wheels are where the confusion starts. They have six lugs with a bolt pattern 7 3/4" between adjacent lugs and 15 1/2" across the circle. The brake drums are at least 14" in diameter. I have not seen this configuration on any tractor that I have run across in person and picture. Could be that I have never seen a 2N. Would appreciate an E-Mail reply. acbaird@ccis.com

From what I can guess from the info I have got from the BOARD your engines serial number is that of a 8N. From what I have read and been told all engines originally equipped on 9N and 2N's serial numbers start with 9N. All 8N engines ( front mount or side mount distributor ) serial number's start 8N. N series tractors have a great deal of subtle differences between the way the models may have come originally from the factory. What the owners and repair shops did as far as switching parts and adding options from later models or using earlier models parts on later models is quite common. As well as you may have a tractor put together from spare parts of 8N, 2N, or 9N. Check the Archives in addition to some other good sites mentioned in recent past pages here at the BOARD. Like Bg's Ford Faq's Page! Good luck.
