The Howard has two speeds - straight-through (no reduction) and a step down of about 3.5:1 - from memory, now. The big plus point for the Howard is that it does not reduce PTO speed.

The Sherman came in three flavors - step-down, step-up or step-down-and-up. The first two give you eight forward gears (six on a 9N/2N), the last an most desirable gives you twelve speeds in an 8N, nine speeds in a 9N/2N. All Sherman styles alter the PTO speed as well.

The Sherman up-and-down is the best choice, hands-down, if you're looking for a wide range of travel speeds. Either of the other two Sherman styles may or may not be appropriate for your application.

The Sherman is not hard to find in any of its versions. The Howard is extraordinarily hard to find in good shape, and repair parts are unobtainable.

llater,
