I have a question.. I don't know much about doing this kind of repair work, but I have been getting deeper and deeper into this stuff and now I have problems with a distributor. I'm not getting a spark so after checking the normal stuff, I decided to go out and buy a tune - up kit and a new coil (looked like the original!). I took the old coil off and the distributor cap. I managed to get the condenser out and removed the hold down screws. I took the rubbing arm out.. Then I noticed on the distributor plate, there is a copper tab rivoted to the distributor plate where the breaker spring screws onto.. I noticed this little tab is starting to come off. There is only about 1/4 of it still attached. I called a New Holland dealer and explained it to him, and he said I would need to buy a whole new distributor plate assemble ($120!). I find it kind of hard to believe that I would need to spend $120 for just a copper tab that is falling off. If anyone can help, please do. I've been trying to get this thing running since the beginning of summer, and the grass is getting really high!! :)

I would appreciate it!
Thanks,
Aaron Smith

Walt's sells you the whole breaker plate assembly (points, spring etc. installed) for $25 plus shipping.

Take the dist off the tractor. The front mount dist. can be worked on while it's on the tractor (I did it for 10 Years !*!) before finding the ultimate front distributor maintenance site. >Link
Look down the left of the page and find the frontmount dist. link and you got more info than you need. Start there. If I understand the copper tab is between the breaker arm spring and the screw where the condensor lead attaches. If this is what you are talking about, I took the old point set, cut off the spring to match the breaking tab, drilled holes (gently) and replaced it for nothing. I even did this with dist on the the tractor. Should be easier after you take dist off. Hope this helps. Good luck

Aaron has given you the right advice. I too recently rebuilt my first N front mount distributor. The little strap you refer to on mine was broken completely in two. I replced it with a piece from the old points and it works just fine thank you. Beware when reinstalling the points that youdon't ground them out on the retainer clip that holds the dist. plate in. Good luck!!

Thank you both for the responses. My uncle works with a guy that rebuilds these for a living, so I gave him a call. He came out to look at it to make sure it was exactly what I thought it was. He recommended the same things you guys did and it worked perfectly! After 2 months of not running it started up immediately! I can cut my grass now!! Now I just have to replace the fuel shut off valve and everything will be perfect!

Thanks again!
