I have a 1950 model 8N and on the engine block somewhere beteen the oil filter and the starter there's about an 1/8" fitting coming out of the block. It has a piece of metal tubing about a 1/4" long sticking out of it.The end of which appears to be stopped up with mud (dirt dobbers) Anybody know what it's for, could it be for a water tempture gauge

Phil, my 8N has a small brass valve in the same spot. I have used it to drain the block when changing the starter. Unfortunately it is right in the way and has to be removed from the block for starter changes It could have originally been for a temp gauge which would be nice to have (atleast on mine). Hope it helps.

The drain petcock on my 49 was in the way of starter removal until I turned it 90 deg ccw to get the turn tab out of the way. Now I can pull the starter without worrying about it. Works for me, Good luck.
