This question doesn't have anything to do with my tractor, but I've learned to trust all of your collective judgement. I have a very large yard with lots and lots of trees, many low hanging spruce and balsam. I've been mowing with a 21" lawnboy. It works good, it just takes about 8 hours of steady mowing. I used a ridder on it once and it took almost as long because of all the backing up and turning and such. What are your thoughts and experiences with DR mowers? Thanks in advance.

Hi Ringy,
Another Jim, another opinion.

I bought a DR Brush & Field mower last spring. It’s great for the purpose we are using it for but don’t think it would be suitable for a lawn. The mowing height is 4” and not adjustable. I do mow my lawn at home taller than most people but not that tall. At the farm I’m using it to reclaim the yard around the old homestead. It’s about 3 acres and the grass there is pasture type, Orchard grass, Timothy and some Fescue. Tough stuff and the ground is pretty rough.

It’s a great machine, well built and rugged. I’ve cut a lot of buck brush, blackberry bramble, and saplings over 2” in diameter. No sweat. Since the 8N came into my life last fall it’s taken over most of that chore but use the Dr along ditches, pond edges and fences. With the differential (lockable) drive it’s real maneuverable.

Recommend the 12 HP or larger and their heavy-duty blade. The larger engines have an oil pump, keeps the oil flowing on slopes. The only down side is the price, only paid $200. more for my N. They do have an interchangeable, adjustable lawn mower deck, 46” I think. It’s pretty expensive too. $600. last I checked.

Good Luck
Jim

Get a good Stihl weedeater and a zero radius riding mower like a Grasshopper. You will be done in no time.

Amen on the Grasshopper! And in my opinion you should just forget about the DR trimmer. My neighbor bought one that is not self propelled and in rough rocky places it is absolutely no good. You just can't hardly make it go forward in rocks and rough ground because when you push down on the handles to make it go the front digs in.
I would also go with the Stihl trimmer weed eater. It will cut any weed you may encounter. It won't cut sprouts though unless it has the blade on it. I use an old 7" table saw blade on mine and it works just great.

I'll second Jim's post. And if you get the hopper on the back of the Grasshopper you don't have to leave the seat until the tank runs dry.
