A little history on this tractor:
Beginning of the year, the starter wouldn't engage, so I tested the battery and it was fine and cleaned all the contacts.. Once the contacts were cleaned up it would try to start.. It would just turn over, it wouldn't even think about firing. So I checked for spark and there wasn't any. I inspected the distributor cap (front mount) and saw one of the posts broken off. So to make my life easy, I took the hood off after shutting off the fuel valve and disconnecting the line.. After giving it a tune up and replacing the cap, we tried to start it and it fired right up and ran (with the gas tank off). Well, it was getting late by then, so we quit for the day. Well, tonight I threw a new radiator in it and put the hood back on. I noticed the valve was leaking a little bit so I decided to just replace the whole thing. I put the new one on and connected the fuel line back up. (I turned the shutoff wheel 2 full turns) I tried to start it tonight and it just wouldn't go. SO I made sure there was a spark still (there is), then I bled out the fuel line at the carb to make sure it is flowing well (which it is).. So we disconnected the air intake and threw some gas in it (not sure that was the best idea). We filled a cap (off of a can of liguid wrench) and just kind of tossed it in, if you will... It worked for all of 5 seconds.. The tractor started for a few seconds, then shut off... We did this about 6 or 7 times to try and see if it would keep running, but no go. It seems as soon as what we threw in it was gone it just wouldn't suck in any more. Does anyone have any idea why it would be doing this and what I can try? When we had the hood off it ran great for about 30 - 40 seconds until the gas that was still in the fuel line was exhausted.. I'm so close to getting my grass cut I can taste it!!! :)

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Arron..... ....Drain some of your gas into a quart glass jar and see if any water settles out. I had a simular problem I'm embarrassed to admit, I ended up draining over 2 qts of water out of the tank. Sumptin about water doesn't burn. Oh yeah, make certian the fuel filter in the elbow to the carb is cleaned out too..... .Dell

After draining any obvious water out, add a bottle of isopropyl alcohol to the gas. It will absorb the water and mix with the gas for combustion.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm not sure if this is a water problem. I had to completely drain out the gass tank to get the new fuel valve in, and I completely ran out what gas was in the carb and in the fuel line. However, I am thinking this may be a clogged up fuel filter... I didn't look inside the gas tank to see if there was any dirt or crap in it, but I do remember draining the sediment bowl out after putting the new valve on and letting the rest of the gas go in, and I saw some crap that looked like a clay substance in the bottom.. Not much, just a little, but I'm now wondering if some of that got into the fuel filter and clogged it up... Thats gonna be the first thing I check when I get out there after work tonight...

Aaron, I'd go one step further checking out fuel supply. Remove the elbow fitting on the carb and check the screen filter to see if it's plugged. Hope it's as simple as that. Good luck. Fred

Okay.. Some more info.. I went out there tonight.. A local tractor mechanic told me to tap the carb with a hammer because the float might be sticking.. I first tried to start it up after it had been sitting all night.. No go. SO I tapped it a few times with a hammer and tried it.. Well it fired right up and ran.. If I turned the throttle down, it would shut off, but would start right back up. So figuring it was okay, I put the air intake hose back on (which took me an hour to figure it out :) ).. After putting it back on, it wouldn't start again. So I tapped it a few more times.. Nothing. Not wanting to take the dang air hose off, I took the fuel screen out and it looked brand new. Didn't see any fouling or anything stuck to it, so I blew it out anyway and put it back in. Still wouldn't start. So I took the air hose off and tried it just to see, still nothing. I tried throwing some gas in it, and it would do the same thing as last night.. Start up for a few seconds then quit.. I tried to drain the carb.. There was a screw plug on the bottom of the carb and I took it out but nothing drained out the bottom of it, which was kind of strange.. Should I just get a carb rebuild kit next and take it apart to clean it and replace some stuff or is there other avenues I can travel first?

I'm so close!!!! :)

If you opened the drain and nothing came out, I'd suspect:
Float/needle stuck or crudded up.
Carb jets and orifices are probably gunked up if the abovecondition is true.
Fuel tank vent stopped up.(less likely than float problems-loosen the gas cap and see if that helps.)
When you remove the drain plug, the float should naturally fall down, opening the needle valve, which would allow gas to pour out at a pretty good rate.

Aaron, I'd definatly take a serious look at the carb now. How about the idle & main jet adjustment screws just to rule out a very badly adjusted carb. They are usually about 1.5 to 2.5 turns out from closed. Mine usually likes about 2.25 turns out on the main. Otherwise a good cleaning and new kit might be in order. Hope this helps and keep the board posted....Fred

I'm thinking that the carb is just all gummed up, and the floats are sticking. If I take the fuel line off the carb without shutting off the gas, I get a steady stream of gas. I'm going to go get a carb repair kit today. I don't think running any kind of carb cleaner will help in this situation.. At least if it did, it would only be for a short time. So, now I'm off to a new adventure that I have never tried before - Carb repair! :)

Thanks for all the help!
