Lost Bendix Spring In Housing

I've owned my '52 8N for two years, but never had to do any work on it or any other tractor. So I'm kind of a knuckle head and hoping for some advise. Started a 12v conversion which led to removal of starter to make sure bendix was clean (12v spun it a lot faster than 6v and didn't engage flywheel). Starter came out fairly easy, but apparently broke retainer on end of drive and lost the spring somewhere inside. I've tried the easy approach - reaching in with magnet and "gripper" - no luck, but think I can feel it. Now looking at best way to go in. How about taking of oil pan or steering box? Thanks - Paul in NY.

Thanks guys. I should have looked through previous messages before I posted this. Seems most folks are of the opinion that missing parts (small stuff) should just be left alone. It did cross my mind when I saw the gook on the probe end that the spring would probably remain stuck to the bottom. I'll make one more attempt to fish it, but will carry on if I don't catch anything. Paul

If you go up and down steep hills I would get the spring out. I Lifted the steering box up on my 52 8N and was able to fish out the larger pieces. Spring makes a horrible racket when it catches in the ring gear and rockets around inside the bell housing.

Mine rode around in the bottom for 3 years with no problem. If and when you split the tractor you can take it out.

Don't worry about it. It probably is out of harm's way down in the flywheel housing. Replace the bendix you have with the new type and carry on.
