I need to rebuild the clutch linkage on my 8N. There is so much play that the clutch won't disengage and it is out of adjustment travel. Any advice on how to remove the shaft that the clutch pedal pivots on. I have removed the brake pedal from the other end of the shaft but the shaft does not want to come out. It looks like it should pull through to the side that the clutch pedal is on? Any advice will be appreciated.

The shaft cannot be removed with out breaking the tractor into. However if the throwout bearing is not damaged I doubt that the shaft is the problem. What may be causing the problem is that the lever where it is attached to the shaft on the left side of the clutch housing is broken on the under side of the lever. This a little tricky to figure out but I have seen it happen several times in my years of experiance with 8Ns.
While you push the pedal down with your hand observe the under side of the adjusting rod boss where it is attached to the rod that goes into the tractor if it is cracked it will gap open instead of turning the shaft and hence the throw out bearing forks will not travel enough to release the clutch. You can clamp it tightly together with a small C clamp or vice grip pliers and weld it and you will have save a lot of work if this is the trouble which I suspect it to be.
Let me know if you find it to be so.

Al,

The clutch release fork is attached to the shaft. You will have to split the tractor to remove the shaft. Probably not what you wanted to hear. Check the clutch pages in the master parts manual for a good picture of the clutch "innards".

Good luck,
David

Al,
I got your email off line, but thought I'd go back online here so others could follow the thread. I misinterpreted your original message, and my memory failed again (happening more often these days). It's been a lot of years since I've removed that shaft, but I thought it just tapped out (left to right). Sorry, my wisdom isn't worth much today. Hopefully someone with more recent experience can help.

Good luck, David
