I think that is .004". You bolt them both down with shims behind the bearing cap. Take out enough shims till when you turn a wheel the other wheel turns the same direction ( the axles are touching each other ), add shims until the wheels begin turning the opposite direction (the axles are no longer touching). If you are using .005" shims then you have it. I am ready for this but haven't done it yet, still on blocks waiting for the arrival of a used axle and hub.

I know that as a single NEW part, rear axle should has a play between 0.001" and 0.010", but after certain use time I don't know which should be the recommended value for axle play.
For example:
What is the value for axle play after 10000 km of use?

What is the the spec thickness of the axle nut? I know this sounds weird but mine seems to be worn too thin to get the nut down on the hub and in line with a locking hole. Is this possible? Should I use a washer to back it out far enough to have some adjustment? Llamas?

Be sure your check the threads on the axle. At some time in it's life, my left axle nut had backed off and buggered the threads. In an attempt to fix the situation someone had removed the washer so they could get a few more good threads. It didn't work.

P.S. The torque for this nut is 450ft/lbs. I made a tool by welding a short extension for a 1" drive 2" impact socket onto a 2" square tubing 5' long. I figure 100lbs at 5' will be more than enough to get the 450 ft/lbs of torque.

It has a large washer behind it to press on the hub. If the tapered spline is worn real bad as mine was it still will not tighten the hub and the hub will be loose on the axle. Two options here, take the axle in to be built back up and recut at a machine shop ( not cheap ) or get a new axle and /or hub depending which is worn out.
