9N startes easliy, and runs fine for about 10 minutes. Then it loses power, starts backfireing, and missing. This is with a 5 foot mower attached. Have cleaned and adjusted carburator. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem and posted it here a while back. One good reader said "replace the resistor". I did. It cost under six dollars. Now I can't stop that old 9-n. It runs with the switch off and the gas tank empty. Wonderful. Try it for $6.00. Good luck.

Roger..... .as Reddy Kilowatt used to say "ya' got low sparkies" or sumpn' like that. Another N-Board contributor used to say "90% of all carb problems are found in the ignition system"..... enuff clues?

You're looking at eather a bad ignition switch or bad coil. Both are heat/time sensitive. Eazy check: next time it stops on you, jumper arount the ignition switch wires with an aligator clipie test lead, if it starts right up you've solved your problem. If not, you've eliminated a problem and the obvious problem is that darn ol' 9N coil. You know the drill, replace the coil.

Hope this gets you back in the field..... ..Dell

I've had the identical problem on my 8N, and the problem was in fact the coil. I used multi-meter to check for resistance right after it quit, while hot. Interestingly, it read 'normal' while cold, but showed open circuit when hot. Replaced the coil and bingo, fixed the problem. Several weeks later it's started again...doesn't seem to be the coil this time, or the ignition switch. Have rebuilt the carb, cleaned fuel line twice and the tank...running out of ideas now! Anybody got any other ideas?

Yes, sounds like you have a front mount distributor and coil. In which case there should be an inline ballast resistor. If it's missing or wired out of the circuit, then the coil is being overdriven and will overheat and break down over time. So you may have damaged the second one. Best to check out that resistor first.
Eric

If it's one of those wonderful front-mount distributors, check the ballast resistor and wiring connections. If the resistor has "gone south" you can cook a coil.
