Finally figured out a tricky ignition problem

For months I've been replacing every part that might cause a recurring heat and/or vibration related problem of abrupt engine quiting. I have finaly settled on the little copper foil strip connecting the post through the distributor wall to the condenser. My old one was sort of hanging by a thread but looked "good enough".

Out of desparation, I broke it completely off and bent it against the connector screw on the points/condenser lead and my long dead N started immediately. Runs great and no longer quits unexpectedly. Was this a fluke only to tease me or can I relax and be confident I have a tractor again I can rely on? I do have a new strip to install this weekend. Anything else I should replace while I have all the little screws out?

I am glad to read of the solution you came upon.
But I am not sure I understand just what part you are writing about. I to am having this problem and would love to solve it. Please point to a picture of what you are taking about.
Thanks Dave

Ray,

Had the same problem a few years ago, while mowing the lot furthest from the house (of course!). What I did was make a short jumper wire between the two contacts out of stranded #14 wire and two spade lugs. I figured the wire would be able to take the vibration better than the solid copper contact. The ol' 2N has been running great ever since!
