I have a 8n with a flail mower, when being used, the mower lifts up on its own. If you lower the mower to the ground it stays, if you set it up high with the position control, it goes up on its own. It appears that the position control is not working. Basically it won't hold a steady height without going up on its own. When it the up position it will not always go down. If you move the handle back and forth, it will drop to the ground. Advice would be greatly appeciated.

In addition to making the adjustments for the main control spring and the quadrant, two other things come to mind. First, is that the adjustments are so far out that even though the position control lever is in position control (vertical), the lift is working in draft control control. Automatic lifting of the 3pt on varying load/drag, points to automatic draft control operation. The second thing is that there is some leakage in the system and the automatic position control system is correcting for the drop. Follow the basic troubleshooting procedures, which are in the archives, for locating and identifing leaks in the system. Basically you remove the right side inspection cover, operate the lift, and look for leaks and disturbances in the oil sump. Eric

You can try adjusting the quadrant first. Also adjust the big control spring on the top of the differential behind the seat. You should be able to firmly rotate it by hand if it's adjusted right. If that doesn't fix the problem, you'll have to inside and adjust the draft control springs and linkage and perhaps replace/repair the valves.
