NAA Electrical Problem

I have just restored a 53 NAA and she is up and running. I have an electrical bug. When I purchased the tractor, the electrical system was wired negative ground (the tractor should be positive ground). I put a new wiring harness on and new regulator and left the system negative ground as I heard that I would have to polarize the generator to reverse the polarity configuration. Upon starting the tractor everything seemed fine. The ammeter showed a good positive charge, etc. After running the tractor a few times I shut it off and the voltage regulator was buzzing. I disconnected the battery and investigated. The top contact (larger wire-wrapped coil) buzzes when I reconnect the battery even with the ignition off. What is the cause and what/how should I check/correct? Does this have anything to do with the reversed grounding (negative ground)? Will this be corrected if I repolarize the generator? How do I polarize the generator? Responses will be greatly appreciated.

If the system is still 6 volts then it needs to stay postitve ground. The regulator etc. is designed for it.
It sounds to me as if you may have the wiring conected incorrectly. check to be sure that the armature wire and the field wires and the ground wires are going to the right terminals. You should disconnect each endividual wire and check for continutity with an ohm meter to assure you that you have the right wires going to the right terminals. If the polarity is right the generator will charge to the plus side of the ammeter and not be jumping back and forth or reading negative.

Even if the generator were polarized wrong it would not cause the regulator to buzz.My thinking is that you have the field and armature wires crossed or some of the other wires to the regulator.
When charging right the ammeter hand will be deflected to the plus side after starting and then gradually go to just barely on the plus side when the battery is fully recharged after being started.

Zane: Thank you for the informational response! The system is 6-volt. I have reconfigured the battery to positive ground and double checked the wiring. I was careful to mark the wires on the old harness but it is in such bad shape I can't confirm continuity as everything is shorted together and so brittle I can't peal the tape off the bundle to seperate whats left of the wires. I got a NAA wiring diagram from Ron's NAA Page and although Ron made no garentees, it worked for him. My 2N,8N,9N I&T manual does not really help out. I'm pretty sure everything is wired correctly but with regard to the regulator-generator wiring here is the way I have it: The heavy-gage red wire from the post on the back plate of the generator is connected to the regulator post marked ARM. The black wire on the post of the generator closest to the block is connected to the regulator box and mounting screw (as a ground). The white wire on the outer generator post is connected to the regulator post marked FLD. The wire on the BAT post of the regulator goes to the ammeter and I'm pretty sure the rest is ok. I fired her up again and the ammeter reads -10 indicating that the polarity will have to be reversed. With the engine off, the regulator still buzzes as the heavy coil points arc whether the ignition is on or off. Do you see a problem with my configuration or could I have a short in the generator? Any thoughts? Thanks.
