8n oil filler tube

My oil filler tube is a very loose fit into the engine block; it leaks and I have to hold it in when removing the cap. I have a wire tie on it just to keep it from falling out accidently.

How are those mounted on other 8n's? Welded? Just jammed in? I noticed in the rebuild video that the tube never came off that engine even though everything else did.

Anyone know who carries a new/replacement one? I looked at the catalog sellers that support this forum and didn't see it anywhere...

Everything Zane said. It was originally a tight interference fit in the hole in the block and after 50 years, they tend to wallow loose.

If you have access to an expander tool, such as are used for exhaust piping, that will do a fine job. I glue 'em in with JB Weld.

It is a simple matter to restore the fit of the filler tube to the block. Remove the tube from the block. Place the end that goes into the block over a steel bar of as nearly the inside diameter as you can find.Heavy wall pipe will work too. lightly hammer all the way around the tube while holding it over the bar or pipe. Try not to strike it on the very end of the tube so that you will have a starting place when you reinstall it.Move up and down with the hammer blows all the way around the tube. Try the fit after you have struck it the first time around to be sure you don't get it too big. Too big can't be fixed!
When you think it is expanded enough to hold tight you should put a light coating of silicone glue around it and then using a piece of hard wood and a hammer drive it back in place in the block. Be sure to have it turned the right way because once it is in it will be hard to get back out or turn to align. Put a piece of cloth into the tube before you drive it home to prevent any foreign material from entering the tube and crankcase.

You didn't say if it's a early or late 8n, but try FNH. They might still carry them. I hope they do, cause I'll be needing a new one for a late 8n. I have one from a 1940 9n I would part with, but it wouldn't work on a side mount distributer engine. It's much too long. Also just read a post a while back about expanding the end of the tube just a little to make it fit tighter. You might try doing that. Good luck!!
