The 600-800 Shop Manual shows a Sherman Forward/Reverse transmission in addition to the over/under tranny. What the heck is the Forward/Reverse and how's it different?? I've never run into a 'Hundred series with a Sherman. Anyone got any idea of how common they were on the later tractors??

The forward and reverse transmission was simply a gearbox that reversed rotation of the input shaft into the main gearbox. In forward, all was normal. In reverse, you now had three or four reverse speeds and one forward speed. Made it very handy when shuttling back and forward.

Don't know about production numbers.

Forward/reverse transmission gave you all of the normal forward speeds in both directions. As Dell says, you needed this if you installed a rear-mounted forklift mast. Various firms made these, including the same Funk that made the V8 kits. I believe there were some models that could be shifted on-the-fly and gave the effect of a semi-automatic transmission - no need to depress the clutch to reverse direction.

Sort of a Ford 'torque amplifier' similar to IHC? Very interesting.

Well, as it happens, the last one I worked on was a Funk reversing gearbox, fitted to a forklift built on a late '50s IHC tractor chassis - soemething like a 460 or 560, maybe? It was indeed rather like a TA unit - a wet-disk clutch pack, hydraulically operated. You could shift this on-the-fly - take your foot off the gas, clutch pack disengages, shift from forward to reverse, reapply foot to gas, clutch pack engages and you drive away in the same gear the other direction. There was enough drag that you couldn't shift gears that way, but still had to use the regular clutch. On a dead flat surface, it would "creep" when idling, but I had no manual or other data and that may be a matter of adjustment. Interesting little puppy.
