I bought a 47 2 N a few months ago. After using a few times I noticed the oil pressure drop. It has dropped to 12 - 15 . I used two gauges to verify this was correct, it also had pecking noise in the valve area. There was a little slug in the screen on the drain plug. Changed the oil twice and looks ok. I am currently planning to put in a oil pump kit, this is my first time on working with N engines. Any advice would be appreciated.

You say you got some sludge out when you changed the oil. Let me tell you that the first time I changed the oil in my 8N, I pulled or scooped three handfulls of sludge out the oil filter cannister. The drain at the bottom of the filter cannister was so plugged that I had to run a piece of wire through it. No wonder the oil pressure would show 60 PSI no matter if the engine was at high speed or at idle.

After about the third oil and filter change, the oil pressure gauge started to respond reasonable. ie. max at 45-50, idle at 20. (I may still have some blockage)

Now that I got everthing opened up, I now have more oil leaks. I'm using 10-40W.

No question. Just thought everbody might be interested.

Paul:
Working on the 8N is a lot of fun, but 15 pounds of pressure is not bad. Even a newly rebuilt engine will often drop to 20 pounds when its warmed up and idling. These old tractors are not designed to run with the consistent 40 pounds that you have in more modern vehicles. If you are generating that much pressure, the drop is probably not the oil pump but some pressure slipping past the main and rod bearings as the oil heats up and thins out. If you want to explore the inner workings of your tractor thats fun, but rebuilding the oil pump probably will not significantly improve your current pressure. I don't think you have a problem with your current pressure. Good luck and happy tractoring.

Absolutely concur with what Mike says. 15 psi when fully warmed up is no cause for concern in this motor. The highest oil pressure it will ever make is 35 psi, because that's where the oil pressure relief valve lifts off. If you've got good power, burning no significant amount of oil, and no nasty mechanical noises, I'd leave well enough alone. You might consider using a heavier grade of oil if you are seeing very high outside temperatures.

I agree with the 35 psi, that is what my 8N has over 1200 rpm, goes to about 20 at idle, using 10w-30. The disadvantage of having this much pressure is that the leaks are very easy to find and hard to stop!!!
