The tank on my 8N is rusted pretty bad,so I was thing about using one of those tank rust removal/sealer kits.I haven't had any experience with tank sealers and I was hoping some of you folks could share your experience. I don't want to put somthing in my tank thats going to turn to goo in a year or two.

Thanks Phil

I recently purchased an 8N with a badly rusted fuel tank -- after talking to a retired ford mechanic, I decided to replace the tank. Horror stories about the Muriatic Acid making the tank weak where the rust was really bad and fuel leaks over the head. NH dealer ordered the tank and sediment bowl for me -- Tractor runs Great!! a little pricey ($230)but I only paid 2100 for the tractor and 5ft bush hog (yes, it has ORC) so still don't have too much in it for the work it does!
Good luck

I've been a motorcycle mechanic off and on for many years now. And in that time I've had to repair the damage done by fuel tank sealers. I absolutely would never use one in any machine of mine, would probably turn down any potential machine if I found that trash in there, and would never advise a customer or friend to use any of them under any conditions.

That said, seems folks here with N's have somehow had good luck with fuel tank sealers.

Motorcycle shops sell a product called Kreem, comes in a kit with acid, alcohol rinse, and 1 qt. of sealer for around $30. I used it on a rusted tank on a motorcycle, sold the bike 3 years later and it was still working good.

You can get a good sealer from Mac's Antique Auto in Lockport NY, it comes in qt cans and a can will do your tank. His sealer is also alchol resistant. You MUST clean you tank first. The muriatic acid method will work. Be sure its good an clean and dry before you put the sealer in and slosh it. I do my tanks on a hot sunny day and let the sun dry them both of water and sealer.

There were a lot of posts with good information on sealers a couple of weeks back. You might want to search the archives.

I have no long term experience with the product, but Bill Hirsch tank sealer seems to work well. I just done mine and am really pleased with the results. I just got muratic acid 1 quart from a hardware store, much cheaper there than buying through shop. Mixed it in the tank to 4 parts water, sloshed it around 10 minutes, rinsed out tank with hose for 1/2 hour, dried well, poured in tank sealer, sloshed it around, drained and let dry for 24 hours. 1 quart of tank sealer did my 2 tractors, looks great. I doubt if it will ever come loose . Good luck. Stan
