How big a job would it be for a novice to get
at this nut? I've never even taken one of the
rear tires off on my 8N!

Also, what's the best way to evaluate whether
it's worth doing at all? If I understand this
problem it's possible that the casting can
be "wallered" out so that no manner of
tightening will matter for very long?

Thanks,
Jerry

If I am not mistaken the nut inside torques to 150 ft/lbs. I know it sounds like a lot but a little RTV and mine quit leaking.

Yes, there is supposed to be a gasket. It is "no longer serviced" by Ford-NH. So get out your rubberized cork and your gasket punches. It's not hard to make one.

I don't know a torque number for the nut. I do 'em up with a 24" ratchet until I grunt, not too hard. As rough as it is to get to these, a good healthy layer of gasket cement everywhere it might leak is probably good insurance.

llater,
