8N or 9N?

I looked at a Ford tractor that has an engine serial number 9N183441, which to me says it's a 9N. But, it has a four speed transmission in it. Were there some 9N's with four speeds? How can I tell if this is a 9N with an 8N transmission or an 8N with a 9N engine?

Check your hydraulics...8n tractors have draft control (2nd small lever above larger 3 point control lever) this would be further indication of a swap of a 9n motor into a 8n tractor(vs a trans swap into a 9n). I believe it was Dell who once said ..."this happens in the best of families"...8^)...either way N-joy David

At what point does one become the other. Surely it is a hybrid. 8Ns have both brake pedals on the right hand side of the tractor, the dash is different, throttle quadrant is a flat plate on the 8N, throttle linkage is different, steering is different, running boards etc... Most likely, someone replaced the engine with a rebuilt unit. Unless you specify right side distributor, you a liable to get one from a 2N or 9N as well as 8N.

Sounds like you looked at a 2N where somewhere in time someone took an 8N engine to replace the 2N engine. Probably a good working tractor, but if you want original, I do not believe any 9 or 2N's came factory equipped with a four speed tanny.
