I have a 1940 9N, that has different turning radius to each side. Have checked the steering sector mesh IAW I&T manual and that seems to be correct. Steering arms are different on each side and someone has welded one side onto the spindle. I can correct this by lengthing/shorting the stops on the underside of the steering arms if i knew what the turning radius is supposed to be. I have checked I&T and the archives and used site search and found nothing yet. Thanks

When I was about 16 years old I saw a brand new 51 Ford 8N at the Alabama State fair with the steering wheel tied so that it would turn to the left as far as it would go. It waw turning in a circle of about 10 or 12 feet on the inside wheel and had made a rut in the dry hard ground about a foot deep. They let it go round and round all week.Just let it run till it ran out of gas and the filled it back up and let it go around some more.Prettiest little red and grew tractor I ever saw.And they still are.
Bet they sold a lot of tractors that week in 51.

My 41 9N had the same repair. These early tractors did not use a keyway between the arm and spindle shaft extension and the pinchbolts were on the inside rather than the outside. This didn't work so well, starting in 42 they were changed. I grinded the weld down and removed the arm and spindle and replaced it with the newer style. Not sure about the turning radius, the arm may have been welded on in the wrong position. Usually you can adjust this by adjusting the tierod ends.

The turning radius on an 8N is 8ft using the brakes. I wouldn't change the stops. I'd cahnege the spindles and drag links. After you get the spindles right, then equal-length drag links should be installed and adjusted toset the toe-in, which should be about 1/4".
