8N Start/Run problems

I am in need of advice/info on my 8N. It won't run properly after it has been started. It won't idle at all unless the choke is held in the half-choked position, after it has been choked fully for a bit. Fully releasing the choke causes it to stall. Attempts to adjust the idle screw are to no avail. When it is running with the choke either fully or half engaged, it runs beautifully; no sputtering or backfiring, so I believe the timing to be correct. Plugs are new, and gapped to .025, as are the points (side mount distributor). As I stated, the problem only occurs when I fully release the choke lever. Has anyone ever had any experience of this sort, that can offer me any insight? I am prepared to buy a new carb, if that is the problem, but first I would like some validation before I spend my hard-earned cash.
Thanks in advance.

Ray

My 2N had the same problem awhile back. After taking the carb apart several times. I decided to look further. I found that the point gap had closed up. Changed the points and she runs fine.

Ray..... .Sounds like a clogged main jet or air leak. How comfortable are you with carburators? (the're not rocket science you know, made for farmers, grin)

Basically, there are 2 fuel adjust needles, main jet, idle mixture jet. and an idle set screw. I'd gently, but firmly screw the main jet closed (hopefully dislodging the clog) and then reset it to 2 full turns out. My 8N runs best at about 1 1/2 turns, some have to go out to 2 1/2 turns but no more. If you've diddled with the Idle mixture adjust, just set it for 1 turn out to get you going.

If that doesn't solve your problem,(I like to do the eazy stuff first), then I'd consider spraying something like WD-40 around the carb while the engine is running, If the speed picks up (by burning the WD-40) then you have found your air leak ( which is causing lean burn....ie... need for choke)

The Hardest part about rebuilding a N-carb is loosing the parts (don't ask) take your time and don't do it out in the field on the hood.

Hope this inspires you.....and the last thing I'd do is buy a new carb..... .good Luck..... Dell

First thing I would look for is a leak in the intake manifold... When it is running run your hand along the gasket surface and check for an exhaust leak (Don't burn your hand) If there is no exhaust leak then the carb would be next.. Perhaps it is sucking in air someplace.
Good Luck and Happy Motoring

Do not go out and buy a carb. If you have some mechanical aptitude, purchase a carb rebuild kit from you local ford n/h dealer or other equip dealer and tear down the carb and thoughly clean it. Soak it thoroughly in lacquer thinner to aid in cleaning. Make positively sure all the air and fuel passages are clear. The problem is in the carb and its probably dirt or rust or both. If your not up to that, take it to a repair shop and have them rebuild it for you.
