Thermostats ??????

I discovered my 8N doesn't have a thermostat. It's been running great, but I still wondered if it needed one. Well I checked all the old post and it seems most folks agree that an N tractor needs it's thermostat. Ok, so I go to my Ford/New Holland dealer to get one. I was informed that I didn't need one and that very few tractors ever left the factory with a thermostat in them. They were not needed and the tractor was designed to work without one. (They acted like this was the first time anybody ever ask for one.) I guess my question is, did I miss something in all those old post that I read? Did Ford put thermoatats in their N's or not?

There's a thermostat pretty as can be in the IT manual, page 47, para 63, Figure FO69. It may run OK without one, but Ford did not design it that way, IMHO.

I don't know if Ford put them in originally or not but I just returned today from buying a thermostat from the local New Holland dealer. The parts manager has been working on N's for 45 years and I asked him whether I need one or not. He said most people don't use one BUT if you use the tractor in the winter it's best to have one. Wasn't very expensive and can't hurt so I bought it. One clue that New Holland expects you to use a thermostat is that the stock radiator hose comes with a retaining clamp to keep the thermostat in place.

BTW, it's really nice to have a knowledgeable and well stocked New Holland dealer nearby. This guy says if he doesn't have it in stock, no one else probably will either. So far he's been right.

Phil,
I stand by my original post. Your friendly NH dealer probably did not have one in stock to sell you. If you will think about when the N was designed and that at that time the designers of tractors were more concern with keeping the tractor cool than at an optimal operating temperature. The Ford tractor that preceeded the N (Fordson) did not even have a water pump if memory serves me right. We have come a long way in our understanding of engine longivity. FWIW,
ray
