Thanks to all who responded to my last question. I had a thirty second leakdown. I removed the inspection cover and operated the hydraulics to find fluid pouring out of the ram cylinder. I also had turbulance in the remaining fluid in the sump. Following the F04 service manual, I removed the lift cover and ram cylinder. The cylinder had light scoring which I was able to remove by honing. The piston however, is not the three ring version shown in the manual. Mine only has one large groove. It had a slightly worn o-ring and a few chunks of flat rubber wedged in the groove. The folks down at Tractor Supply told me the chunks were the remains of a flat rubber washer. I ordered a new o-ring and flat washer. Which goes on top, o-ring or flat washer? Also, do the piston to cylinder tolerances given in the manual apply to this o-ring piston? I performed all the adjustments given in the manual since I had the lift cover off, and found the draft control spring adjustment to be impossible, since the surfaces to measure between are not parallel all the way around, and one piece is cast, leaving a rough surface to measure to. The tolerance given on the spring length is 1/64". There are 1/8" irregularities on the casting alone. Any suggestions for getting this critical measurement correct, or is it just a game of trial and error? Thanks again for any help!!

what you have is an NAA piston and rings (o). this is a much better arrangement than the original steel rings and the tolerences given for the steel rings are not aplicable in this application.the O ring goes against the oil and the back up washer goes toward the rear of the tractor or opening of the cylinder bore.

One thing you should look at while the cover is off is the cam follower pin. If it is worn a lot it will radically change the adjustment of both the draft and position control linkage. Usually this pin will need to be replaced befor you ever manage to get the linkage and adjustment right.

He is right on there, my pin was worn almost half through. I had to take up the slack on the adjustment about 1\2" or more.

The flat leather or rubber gasket goes behind the o-ring, that is the o-ring is at the top of the piston with the flat underneath. Soak the flat gasket in oil for a while it will finally stretch to fit after some gentle stetching over the piston. I put them on from the top of the piston, flat gasket first.

The measurement on the big spring is 3 9\16", I took the average as it was a little crooked. The other spring adjustment is important also, page 92 , paragraph 154, in the I&T FO-4.
