what is the preferred lubricant for the transmission these days. I know the manual calls for SAE 90 but that was 50 years ago.

i may be wrong, but if the 90 wt. oil has worked for 50 years, why would an N owner want to change to the 134 hyd. oil. in the engine though a good detergent oil is a lot better than the non-detergent oil specified in the manual

Oh Boy. I think you can fill pages on the archives with this. What is preferred is what you want. Ford now specs the 134D (there may be a newer suffix). It is state of the art. There are pros and cons to both, i.e. the 134 I'm told is more prone to leaks and the gear lube is more forgiving of a leaky hydraulic system. On the flip side, the 134 works better in cold weather.

After several years, I don't believe there is a definitive yes or no on which is "better". Whichever you prefer. What is agreed upon is that it should be changed regularly to insure it is free of moisture and the sump cleaned.

I just purchased a 9N and the PTO shaft seal is
leaking a light oil. Do the transmission and rear
end fill through the same filler hole? Do they use the same oil?

Bruce..... yes, 9N's have 1 tranny fill for the tranny, differential, and the hydraulic pump. how-some-ever, there are 3 drains and it takes 5 gallons of Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D hydraulic oil to fill it all. 60 yrs ago, Ford recommended 90wt gear oil, but there have been tremendious advances in lubrication technology since then. I recommend and use the M2C-134D in my 8N, you can use what ever you want.

Hope this helps and welcome to the wonderful world of N-Tractors..... ..Dell
