Hoping for a quick fix for generator

While troubleshooting the electrical system to find out why the battery is always discharging, I broke the generator ground screw off right where the wire connector lug attaches. Is there any way to fix this that doesn't involve disassembling the generator?

It's an original equipment generator from all accounts and the tractor is 1947 vintage. Unless there is some value to keeping and rebuilding the generator to maintain its original equipment inventory, I'd rather replace the generator if it turns out that that is the culprit. So I'm looking for some fix that would allow me to only take the thing apart as a last resort.

If this is still an original-equipment, single-terminal generator, I wonder whether you mean the output stud rather than the "ground screw" - this generator has no separate ground connection.

If this is the case, there's no help for it - you have to take it apart. But it's easy! There's absolutely nothing inside a generator to be afraid of. For $15, buy a generator rebuild kit, and treat it to new brushes etc, while you're in there. Once you have it apart (only the brush end needs to come off) the construction of the output stud should be quite plain and you can replace it with a common screw and nut, brass preferred.

The generator ground wire can be attahed to the through bolts that hold the generator together. Actually, unless there is corrosion of loose mounting hardware the generator is suffeciently grounded without the wire even being attached to the generator.
Have you tried polarizing the generator by removing the Gen or arm wire from the generator and striking the post on the generator with a hot wire from the negative post of the battery?
If the tractor is still 6volts it must have a positive ground at the battery. Positive to ground and negative to hot.
To asertain wheather or not the generator or the voltage regulator is working ground the field terminal at the generator and observe the ammeter. If it causes the ammeter to go up high on the scale then the generator is charging and either the regulator is bad or the wiring.

Thanks,

I tried that test and just the opposite happens. I haven't been able to figure it out so I'm taking the christmas tree light approach -- replacing components until the problem goes away.
