Need some help. I've been asked by a friend of mine to dig some post holes for him. What is the maximum size auger bite I can use on my 8N? Thanks.

I just got a post hole digger 2 days ago. I haven't tried it on my 8N yet because the driveshaft is too long and I just didn't feel like cutting it off last night at 10:00 when I finally had time to test it out.

But I did put it on my little 14 HP Kubota. I have a 12" auger and made a 42" deep hole in about 15 seconds - no problem.

So, if the kubota can do it I'm sure the 8N will have no problam at all. Reading through the other responses I guess it matters what kind of soil you have. Around here it is very sandy so digging is easy.

I use a 12" on my 9N. I haven't tried anything larger because that's all I've got. Just be real careful with the non-live pto. I disconnect the drive shaft while moving from place to place.

I use a 9" auger on my 9N and it seems to have plenty of power. This size hole allows you to move the post for positioning. My soil has some clay and hardpan. If you break thru the hardpan and it doesn't break it up it will thread into it. I have had to use a large pipe wrench to back out a few times. If your hydraulics are in good shape you can move from hole to hole by just disengauging the PTO. Most of my problems have been with tree roots...Good Luck!

A neighbor tried to sell me on his old post hole digger with a 12 inch auger. The story he was told was that a smaller one would tend to jam and corkscrew around here with al lthe rocks in the clay. I don't know whether to agree or not, not actually having any experience with one here. He used it on a 600 , and it was all the tractor could do to dig 4 foot deep post holes for a pole barn.

I don't know about you Russ, but I used a 12" auger to bore 18? holes for a pole barn I built, I thought the 12" was quite the handfull for my 50 8n ?, I had a hell of a time !!, of coarse, I was in some grey clay, which is the worst stuff known to mankind !(-:

later,dave

Been running 9" and 12" augers on my 8N. If the soil conditions are good, the 12" digs great. About 30 secs to full depth. However, the usual hard packed clay here is a little tougher. I was having problems with the 12" and bought a 9" auger which dug thru the hard clay like it wasn't there. May need to sharpen the teeth on the big auger.
