Great, just great. He went and spent an amorous (and odorous) evening with the tractor last night. At least he didn't spend the night sleeping on the seat...I think. I'm *not* sniffing it just yet!

Nothing like sleepily walking out the door in the morning, catching that strong wiff of nearby skunk, and tracing it back to your tractor.

Look Pepe, my tractor is not cute, and will not love you. She's butt ugly and her mother dresses her funny. Now please go away and quit trying to romance her!

Yours for scenting tractoring,

Some people use tomato juice to get the oder out. I would rather drink it.

Correction!! The correct formula is:
1 qt 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid detergent
"The materials in the formula, when mixed together, form an alkaline peroxide which chemically changes the skunk spray to sulfonic acid, a totally odorless chemical".
I was asked for some additional info and fortunately I work in a building that has a library and was able to correct my faulty memory.

Has anyone used this? The next question I would have is...Will the mixture, with its H.peroxide, turn my black lab into a blond lab?
In general,..How safe is it for man and/or beast?
Eric

I used that exact formula on my male White German Shepherd when he nailed a skunk. Just as he broke its back, it let loose all over his face. I would not agree that it takes the odor completely away and it didn't do it on the first wash, either. We washed his head three times and he was tolerable enough to let into the house by that night. Before then, we didn't even want him in the yard (really hurt his feelings). Since he's solid white, I can't comment on any bleaching. I couldn't tell any difference in the color of his coat after the washings. But, the solution does work. We got it from our vet.

Mmhm. Haven't met anything that will completely take away skunk odor once its into things like metals. And god knows, we/I've tried lots of them, including a variation on this one.

I got nailed by a skunk working irrigation pipes once about 20 years ago, and had to pedal home. We just got rid of that bike a little while ago, and it still stank like a skunk.

We've also got a trapping box that we store nasty lures in, particularly skunk scent. One of those bottles corroded its lid and allowed the vapors to permiate the box. That box has been our text box for skunk scent removers off and on for years now. No winners yet. And I don't mean you have to stick your nose in there and sniff deeply. Just open the lid and be in the area.

Luckily for me Pepe just spent the night admiring the tractor, not expressing his love. Just a vague faint wiff lingers, and it isn't on the seat or anywhere that's going to make me stink after tractoring. Although, this could be a way to reduce tractor thefts, douse it with skunk scent!

The local Ag Extension Agent had a formula in the paper night-before-last for this problem. Quart of ammonia, some baking soda and a little liquid detergent. No water. Claims that it INSTANTLY gets rid of the problem.

I ran over an already dead skunk when I was young, and my dad slapped me so hard I couldn't find my hat for a week. I was driving a Farmall F-20 with those big odor catching tires. I think my dad saw me do it.
