does anyone know where a "sidewinder" dist adapter can be found? it is an adapter that lets you move the front mount dist to the side, it is a shaft with a right angle gearing setup that bolts to the front and lets you use the front mount dist. it makes adjusting the points much easier and gets the wires away from the belt

Such a set up does exist, Ford part number GP12038, adapter assy distributor. It was used on 1941 Ford GP prototype jeeps that had the 40hp Ford truck engine. It was the same engine as the 9N/2N except it had a downdraft carb and fuel pump, also had a front timing cover that had motor mounts on either side. I have one of those jeeps 1 of around 3500 and built the engine with tractor sleves and other standard parts. To find one of those would be difficult and expensive.

I forgot the dist itself, it looks like a Crosley dist, smaller than a 8N, has a vacuum advance and adjusts like normal dist. It also used the 41-8 remote coil. Gen is on right hand side.

this adapter does exist, I have seen them. an old time tractor man told me about them and then I saw one. it has the save bolt pattern as the distributor, in fact the one end looks just like the dist. it comes out about 1 1/2" and then makes a rightangle turn, i think it was to the driver side,(driver sie of a car). it als angles up about a 30 deg angle. dist bolts on the end, just like it would on the front of the engine, uses the orig. dist and coil. the shaft has beveled gears in the angle section. all gears are the same to give 1 to 1 ratio. I know its not good to have nothing but original parts for a colector but this device really is an improvement to the design

This is the first I've heard of such a thing. Do you have to move the generator to the other side? How do you mount it? Does the oil fill tube change as well? How would you time the engine when there aren't any timing marks on the flywheel? Is it still static?
Inquiring minds...
Let us know what you find out.
Eric

Never heard of such a thing. But the world is just jam-packed with things that I haven't heard of, so what's one more?

But I guess I'd have to see one. I don't see how you could snake such a device in there and miss the belt, generator, etc, etc. All that, to mount the distributor out to the side where you could service it easier, when it comes off completely with just two bolts?

Who has seen such a thing or knows of its existence?

llater,

llamas

llamas,
I had a thought a while back, that one may be able to use parts from the magneto version of the front mount to adapt a different distributor. I lost interest when I decided that the parts, covers, etc. were probably hard to come by and working on the front mounts wasn't any big deal anyway. Eric
